FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Does Secure FTP encrypt the files I transfer?

Yes. Secure FTP can encrypt both the control (command) and data channels. Additionally, Secure FTP supports both implicit and explicit SSL connections.

Does Secure FTP support SFTP (FTP using SSH)?

No. Secure FTP only supports the file transfer protocol (FTP) over secure sockets layer (SSL or TLS).

Is Secure FTP really free?

If you plan on using Secure FTP for: your own personal needs, are a non-profit organization, or are an educational institution, Secure FTP is completely free.

But, if you plan on using this at a commercial facility or for some type of commercial use there is a licensing fee associated with it.

How do I register Secure FTP?

Launch the graphical client as an administrator and go to Help > Register Secure FTP.

Optionally you can register the client from the command-line version by typing register at the ftp> prompt.

Note: only paid versions can register the application.

I'm on Windows and having permission problems...

Only an administrator can register/install Secure FTP, but all other users should be able to use it. But, if your user cannot, grant Full Control rights to this registry entry:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\JavaSoft\Prefs]

to the group (e.g. Powerusers) that your user belongs to.

I'm seeing a 'Could not fine th main class' error on Windows...

The first thing you should do is make sure you have at least Java 1.4 installed. If you don't, you will need to install it.

If you do, make sure the proper version is being called.

  1. Launch the command prompt.
  2. Type java -version

If this isn't calling the proper version, you will need to edit secureftp.bat in the editor of your choice and add (for example):

set PATH="c:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_05\bin"

on the line after @echo off where the PATH matches the directory where the java executable is found.
